An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Engineering Graduate to join us at the Port of Felixstowe.

We are looking are for committed and motivated Graduate Engineers to join our Engineering team. Our practical, hands-on Graduate Programme is designed to support you on your journey to a successful career in engineering.

This is a two-year rotational program that will put you in the middle of everything, allowing you to undertake a dynamic learning experience. You will get to work on exciting and complex projects that provide you with daily learning opportunities, while being supported by experienced team members.

Job purpose

To develop and apply own knowledge and experience gained within the Engineering Graduate Scheme. To identify and apply best practices to solve problems in developed technologies using well proven analytical techniques which support the Engineering and Business objectives. Providing creative solutions to support/develop investment proposals and develop engineering techniques and processes into the future.

Main activities and responsibilities

  • Successful completion of the 2-Year Engineering Graduate Programme.
  • Partake in department/ management Engineering projects from the start until their conclusion.
  • Work closely with the different engineering departments, to plan, manage and direct the activities of HPUK Engineering maintenance teams and contracted engineering maintenance support services.
  • Identify, evaluate and deliver best working practices within Engineering.
  • Learn additional business and commercial leadership skills expected of a future manager.
  • When rotating departments, supporting the management team of Operational Engineering staff, craftspeople and contracted services to ensure that they are safely, effectively and efficiently deployed.
  • Ensure the highest standards of equipment safety, availability and reliability are obtained in the most costeffective manner.
  • Ensure compliance to all policies, procedures, standard operating procedures and safe working practices, with recommendations for action and continuous improvement.
  • Suggest improvements within Engineering services including, staff deployment, training, strategic spares, working practices, engineering information systems and safe systems of work.
  • Ensure compliance to the HPUK Corporate Safety & Sustainability strategy.
  • Contribute toward asset life cycle of major HPUK assets to include liaison with other departments, contribute with component or design changes to reflect in future asset technical specification.
  • Continuous ongoing evidence of technical knowledge required in order to stay abreast of developing technology and other Engineering practices.
  • Support a creative and innovative vision and provide examples of change and implementation.
  • Evidence delivery of objectives/goals.
  • Develop the ability to demonstrate effective teamwork and leadership/ coordination of a team to achieve their goals.

Scope of the role

  • Graduate Engineer, reporting directly to the Engineering Manager.
  • Actively contribute to the allocated projects and, where possible, identify and minimise any additional expenditure to ensure projected budgets are maintained as agreed with Line Manager.
  • Make recommendations of best practise within the Engineering process.
  • Develop decision making skills to include business and commercial elements

Technical skills 

  • Degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Mechanical & Electrical Engineering, of which is accredited by the UK Engineering Council to enable future IEng accreditation.
  • Understanding the engineering vision and transformation opportunities.
  • Full driving license (DVLA).
