It’s an exciting time to join one of our Early Careers programmes at QinetiQ. We are always looking for great people to join our team, whether you are taking your first steps in starting a career or you are looking to make a career change, we have a wide range of exciting opportunities for you.

Systems Software Assurance (SSA)

The SSA Group is part of the QinetiQ Software discipline that supports its customers (such as the UK MoD) in the process of developing and procuring defence related systems. The SSA group comprises engineering specialists, who have the expertise to technically assess a supplier’s system solution and advise their customers on whether the system is ‘fit for purpose’.

Typically, the work of SSA focusses on assessing systems that are based on software and/or programmable electronic hardware (such as FPGAs and ASICs), and used in safety-critical or cybersecurity applications.

Since the software domain faces rapid changes in technologies (which are adopted system developers), SSA engineers need to have a good understanding of current and new technologies/practices. Hence, technically, the SSA is a very progressive and forward-looking group.

The SSA are looking for an undergraduate for a summer internship who wants to use/develop their technical and advisory capabilities. The work of this internship actual will be research based and quite flexible (depending also on the interests of the student). The possible areas are (but not limited to):

  • Examining the latest devices and techniques of developing programmable electronic hardware;
  • Examining the use AI in avionics;
  • Examining phenomena that can disrupt electronic devices (such as radiation causing single event upsets)
  • Modelling of systems that are based on Commercial-of-the-shelf (COTS) components

Academic requirements

You will need to be studying towards at least a 2:2 in a degree with a key focus on any of the disciplines listed below:

  • Computer Science
  • Electrical Electronic Engineering
  • Software Engineering

Candidates who are studying for degrees in the other disciplines (such as Aerospace/Mechanical Engineering, Physics and Mathematics/Engineering Mathematics) but have a particular interest or experience in software development and programmable electronics will also be considered.

Additional requirements

  • Have a strong interest and/or experience within software development or electronic engineering
  • Passionate about learning new technologies (within software engineering and electronics) and problem solving.
  • Work experience in software engineering is beneficial
  • Experience or working knowledge of hardware programming languages (such as VDHL) or digital design is beneficial
  • Knowledge of at least one programming language (such as C#/C++/Java)

Mandatory

In accordance with our National Security Vetting requirements, all applicants must also be eligible for SC clearance as a minimum.

Please note that under immigrations rules, our Early Careers roles do not meet the legal threshold for candidates who are residents of the UK on student visas.
