Our Trainee Accountant programme lasts for three years and combines academic study with work based experience. You will have the opportunity to study towards the globally recognised ICAS Accountancy qualification while working across the Finance areas of the SSE businesses.

Studying for the ICAS qualification requires block periods of study at an ICAS training centre followed by exams for each module.  Periods of study usually range between six to twelve weeks per year of the training contract. When not studying, you will spend the balance of your time on a variety of placements which can include working in the Finance Departments of any of the SSE businesses or within the central Finance functions including Group Finance, Internal Audit and Treasury.  During these placements you will be working alongside experienced SSE staff. 

This training set up will offer a unique opportunity to work with and gain experience in financial accounting, management accounting, internal audit and business decision making over the three year period.

When you reach the third year of the programme you will be expected to have completed the ICAS exam programme and enhanced your knowledge and development through your varying SSE work placements in order to complete your ICAS competency logbook and achieve your Chartered Accountancy qualification.  On completion of the training programme you will be offered a permanent position with the SSE plc Finance team.

What will I do on the programme?

You will studying to complete all ICAS exam modules while enhancing your personal development, knowledge and understanding of both the SSE Group and accountancy qualification in order to achieve the relevant competencies within your ICAS logbook. You'll be working to a high standard both independently and as part of a team when on your work placements in order to meet the objectives you have set by with placement manager. This will also include building strong working relationships with key stakeholders.

What do I need to join?

You will have gained or be predicted to achieve 2:1 Honours Degree in any discipline. You need the willingness to undertake a varied and challenging role with the ability to work to tight timescales to deliver to a high standard to work. We're looking for you to be pro-active and use your initiative in order to work individually or as part of a team and undertake challenging tasks often beyond your ‘comfort zone’.

We'd love you to have practical work or project experience that reflects your passion for the role, as well as demonstrable experience of working in a team. You'll also be comfortable working to and setting stretching individual targets and using your own initiative to overcome challenges.

You should have an interest in the energy sector and show alignment with SSE's core values. We also ask that you have a flexible approach to work locations and be genuinely committed to developing a career with us – as we are with you.
