This year we are delighted to offer a number of graduate opportunities for those with various engineering disciplines across the UK and Ireland. Due to our size and diversity, we can offer you a structured yet challenging development programme where you'll have the support of the Graduate Programme Manager and a business mentor to assist you in reaching your full potential. The programme will support your career development into a permanent role with SSE that reflects your experience and passion.

Depending on the programme you choose, you could be involved in a broad range of exciting projects across the UK and/or Ireland. All roles are likely to involve some travel to other sites to gain practical exposure to a wide range of business areas, therefore a full UK driving licence would be an advantage but is not essential.

What will I do on the programme?

Here's a flavour of some of the exciting initiatives you could be involved in, for each Division.

Transmission (Perth, Inverness, Glasgow, Aberdeen): Working as part of multi-disciplined engineering teams, we have a range of opportunities for engineering graduates to support projects across our Transmission business. We're at the forefront of some really high profile projects which are ensuring our network is structurally sound, operating safely and efficiently and providing sustainable and reliable energy to all. You could be working on projects similar to the development of the new Caithness-Moray electricity transmission line, the reinforcement of substations, and the development of subsea electricity links - connecting some of the remotes part of Scotland to the main Transmission system for the first time.

Distribution (Portsmouth, Southampton, Reading, Oxford, Forbury, Perth, Aberdeen, Inverness): Working as part of multi-disciplined engineering teams, we have a range of opportunities for engineering graduates to support projects across our Distribution business. You'll get to enjoy contributing to some exciting projects where you'll be at the forefront of developing, improving and maintaining our network. You'll be involved in projects and activities that help us ensure our network is not only running effectively, but also is considering innovative new technologies and efficient ways of providing energy to all customers.

SSE Thermal (Perth, Ferrybridge/Leeds, Dublin, Aldbrough/Atwick): Flexible and efficient thermal energy will play a critical role in the transition to a net-zero economy, complementing renewable generation and helping maintain security of supply. It's a great time to join one of our new graduate programmes learn about how the business will play its part in the energy system of tomorrow. SSE Thermal is currently constructing the 840MW Keadby 2 CCGT in North Lincolnshire, which is expected to become the cleanest and most efficient gas-fired power station in Europe when completed in 2022. As part of its commitment to a net-zero emissions future, the business has a core focus on decarbonising its energy generation through exciting carbon capture and hydrogen solutions.

Enterprise Distribution Energy (Glasgow, Reading, Slough): We are delivering the next generation of sustainable energy infrastructure to businesses across the UK. We are a growing business and operate in some really exciting markets from EV to energy storage, from heating and cooling networks to water networks - our business is certainly diverse! 

What do I need to join?

For these programmes, you'll ideally have a minimum of a 2:2 BEng in either an Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical or Civil degree. For a number of our roles we will also accept a degree in Renewable Energy, Thermal Energy, Chemical Engineering, Low Carbon Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Business, Mathematics, Data Science/Data Analytics, Information Management, IT or Economics.

We'd love you to have practical work or project experience that reflects your passion for the role, as well as demonstrable experience of working in a team. You'll also be comfortable working to and setting stretching individual targets and using your own initiative to overcome challenges.

You should have an interest in the energy sector and show alignment with SSE's core values. We also ask that you have a flexible approach to work locations and be genuinely committed to developing a career with us – as we are with you.
