In this exciting new position, the post-holder will play a vital role in supporting the National Finds Adviser for Iron Age & Roman Coins with the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS). This will involve a wide variety of responsibilities within and in support of the PAS nationally.

Key areas of responsibility

  • Support Finds Liaison Officers (FLOs) as part of the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) in the identification and recording of Iron Age and Roman coins.
  • Assist in the delivery of training to FLOs, their assistants (FLAs), interns and volunteers in identifying and recording these coins.
  • Ensure the accuracy and consistency of Iron Age and Roman coin records on the PAS database (finds.org.uk/database) by editing as necessary.
  • Assist BM staff in M&M as appropriate and within reason with the identification of larger coin assemblages (hoards) recorded by the British Museum under the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

About you

The successful candidate will possess a first degree in ancient history, archaeology, classics, a related subject, or equivalent. As a highly technical role, excellent prior knowledge of Roman coinage is essential, with some understanding of Iron Age coinage and experience of work in a university or museum environment desirable.

Working with a variety of stakeholders, excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills are essential to successfully carry out the duties of the role. A publication record in the field of Roman or Iron Age coinage is not essential but would be beneficial.
