Do you have an interest in the environment and want to help protect it? Do you have experience in data management and analysis that you would like to use alongside wastewater or compliance knowledge? If so, this Wastewater Regulation Scientist role could be perfect for you!

    The role

This role will see you join a team of scientists who are responsible for reporting on wastewater compliance for the business. The work that the team undertakes is varied and the team works flexibly to support and help each other out where necessary.

This new role will see you proactively improve the data management and analysis of compliance data. This will involve the improvement of current processes and development of new ways to use a variety of data sources.

This will support the compliance team to complete regulatory reporting and operational teams to ensure they remain compliant with environmental permits. Day to day your role will include:

    • managing a variety of data sets maintained by the compliance team, including numeric data, as well as a variety of other data sets related to compliance
    • analysing and processing data
    • developing and improving processes for data handling
    • writing and compiling reports
    • supporting the wider wastewater compliance team with data improvements and reporting
    • liaising with operational staff to help them maintain compliance
    • supporting with Environment Agency data requests.

    What do you need?

This role is central to developing the way the wastewater compliance team manages and uses data. To work effectively in this role, you will need to be proactive in looking for innovative ways to improve data management and use the data that is available to support the compliance team and the wider business. Familiarity with data sets related to wastewater regulation, or data used in wastewater compliance, will support the successful candidate in being able to deliver the role requirements.

Having the ability to effectively communicate across the team as well as the wider business is key. You will be able to work independently as well as request support when required. Communication within the team is key for workload management, learning and sharing current information, and keeping on top of current team priorities.

A part of this role is being able to translate data into business-friendly reports. To be able to effectively deliver your reporting, you will be required to have good knowledge on Microsoft Excel. Experience using other data analysis tools, such as Qlikview, PowerBI, Python, R and SQL, would be highly desirable. Experience using GIS software and laboratory data systems, such as Scientific Systems, would be beneficia but is not essential.

Experience using continuous improvement processes or managing change would be beneficial for delivering changes to the way data is currently managed within the team.

The successful candidate will either have experience in a science field or will be degree level qualified within a science or related subject. Data management skills will be key to the role. In addition to data management skills, you will preferably have experience of one or more of the following:

    • working within an operational role in the water industry
    • a good technical understanding of wastewater activities
