WTW is a preeminent developer of risk and financial modelling software, with over 400 clients worldwide. We combine the technical innovation and engineering expertise of our software professionals with the actuarial knowledge and thought leadership of our insurance consulting business to provide solutions that help clients measure value, manage risk and safeguard solvency.

WTW’s software solutions support insurance companies and other businesses that require sophisticated and auditable modelling and analytics processes as they confront volatile markets and regulatory changes. Our software solutions underpin a variety of activities, ranging from asset-liability modelling, pricing and reserving, through to economic capital aggregation and allocation.

    The Role

Our 8-week Intern Programme is designed for penultimate year students.

An Internship at WTW will give you valuable real-world experience while you are still a student. It will enable you to apply your education in an environment that is both challenging and rewarding. At the end of your time with us, you will have a greater understanding of what we do and how closely our career offerings match your career aspirations. You will be treated in the same way as our new graduates receiving the same quality and quantity of work. It is the perfect opportunity to gain an insight into what you could expect if you joined our graduate programme the following year.

The programme is geared towards a structured learning environment giving students direct experience in working on real problems in a supportive team environment. Each intern will have a mentor to support them throughout the 8 weeks. Starting with an existing problem (usually set as part of the interview process) we enhance the solution through the application of SOLID principals. As the solution is insurance domain based, we may also look at performance (benchmarking) to widen the students understanding of performant coding. This initial project work is individual in nature but with direct support from their assigned mentor, the student will be expected to present their findings back to the team and sponsors.

After the initial project the bulk of the time (usually around 5-6 weeks) will be spent on a business applicable solution involving many aspects of WTW software delivery technologies and processes. Students will be encouraged to take on greater responsibilities throughout the programme, from process oriented (running Scrum ceremonies) to specialising on an aspect of software delivery (for example performance benchmarking, testing, devops, security) dependent on the needs of the project. We provide the students with ample opportunities to either pair program or self-organise into sub-teams under the direction and tutelage of the mentors. The students will again present their work at the end of the project which feeds into the final selection process.

We aim to give prospective employees (via the internship) a glimpse into the WTW mindset in providing solutions to the market, that we take a collaborative engineering approach in building innovative solutions and making the environment both creative and fun.

The role of the Software Engineering Team is to create, maintain and deliver software to some of the most well-known global insurance companies and the many hundreds of internal consultant users in the Insurance Consulting and Technology business. As a Software Engineering graduate, the role is intentionally varied and will involve you discussing functionality with consultants, proposing solutions and generating prototypes, understanding and coding algorithms ensuring that time and memory constraints are satisfied, iterating user interfaces and researching new technologies and tools.

You will be involved in all aspects of a professional software development life cycle using the latest tools and techniques to deliver complex software of the highest quality. You will learn about professional software development and experience all aspects of today’s industry best practices. This includes but is not limited to:

    • Understanding what our clients need, and solving those problems
    • Developing high-performance, scalable software using various technologies on multiple platforms
    • Creating an engaging user experience through clean and crisp user interfaces
    • Delivering quality using the latest test and automation techniques
    • Deployment to complex IT infrastructures, including cloud environments

This is all done within small agile teams that collaboratively contribute to the effective delivery of high quality software products. As part of our induction program, you will also be introduced to different colleagues and will learn more about the types of software products we create, the way we operate and different roles that we have in our software teams.

    Learning and Development

We are committed to providing continuous professional development to all of our colleagues. For interns specifically, we provide:

    • An induction process where you can learn what our business does, what resources are available, and who the other new interns are
    • On-the-job experiences allowing you to see the immediate impact of your work
    • Opportunities to work on a diverse range project with experience professionals

    The Requirements

    • Minimum 2:1 degree in a Software Engineering, Computer Science or similar technical or analytic discipline with a reasonable understanding of Mathematics is required
    • Penultimate year students

    • Understanding of Software Development Life Cycle and Agile principles
    • Knowledge and experience of using an object-oriented language (such as C#, C++, Java or Python) and/or web technologies (such as HTML/CSS, JavaScript and Angular)
    • Familiarity with unit testing and test automation in general
    • Appreciation of current and emerging technologies
    • Appreciation of algorithm and software performance
