A huge congratulations to Ben who has bagged himself a role at the Civil Service Fast Stream. Here he shares some great details about his experience during the recruitment process.
Why did you choose this firm and this role?:
I chose the Civil Service Fast Stream because it places you in a series of different roles and as such offers a good range of experience. I chose the Diplomatic Service Stream because it is a particularly interesting time to be working for the Foreign Office - it faces some exciting challenges in the next few years. This role also offers me the chance to travel, and the opportunity to learn new languages.
What was the most challenging part of the application process? And your favourite part?:
The most challenging aspect is the number of stages you have to complete. There are multiple online exercises and an assessment centre, and then for some Streams you have to complete further questionnaires and a Final Selection Board. I found the process difficult complete around my job.
Were you surprised by anything in the process?:
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed sections of the Diplomatic Service FSB (Final Selection Board). The two roleplay scenarios were what I was most worried about, but turned out to be fun, if a bit stressful.
What three top tips would you give your fellow Bright Network members?:
1) Accept that it's likely you will have to submit a lot of applications before you are successful. It is demoralising when you feel excited about a job and get rejected, but keep persevering and you will succeed!
2) When you are rejected from somewhere, try and chase them up to get some feedback. Also, try to reflect on every interview or assessment day you participate in, and write down a few ways you could have approached it better.
3) Take a few seconds to think of a which points you want to cover before you respond to an interview question. A second can feel like forever in the moment, but you will come across much more assured if you take the time to gather your thoughts.
