Georgina’s insight into securing a graduate role with Persimmon Homes

Created on 1 Dec 2021

We recently caught up with Georgina about how they secured a role with Persimmon Homes, what the company culture is like and their top tips for Bright Network members looking to follow in their footsteps.

What attracted you to the role at Persimmon Homes and to working for them?

I was in a similar situation to a lot of people who are facing graduation and know that they do not want to continue studying but are also apprehensive about choosing a career in case it limits them in the future or they choose something they end up not enjoying. Persimmon Homes offered an amazing opportunity to spend nine weeks in each of their departments, providing a great range of opportunities. This meant that I could experience different career options before having to make a decision. The dedicated people behind the scheme work carefully to tailor it to each graduate; we each have a completely unique pathway. I was also aware of Persimmon’s new CEO and his plans to revitalise the public perception of the company and improve quality and customer experience. I wanted to join at this time of change and hopefully have an impact.

How did Bright Network help you secure this role?

Bright Network highlighted this opportunity to me. Throughout the entire process, they were helpful and fast to respond to queries. One thing that really stands out to me was at the assessment centre. This was my first assessment centre and the representative from Bright Network made me feel much more relaxed and gave me encouragement. They ensured that the application and recruitment process ran smoothly and I have since been recommending them to all my friends who have not yet graduated.

What is the culture like at Persimmon Homes?

Persimmon Homes Plc has supported me through the graduate scheme so far and everyone I have met has been so helpful. Persimmon Homes West Midlands has a great community feel. The nature of the business means that each department has to work closely with one another and this means that you quickly get to know different people. There are always social things to do such as football games against other offices and businesses. The culture is definitely one of support, I have never felt neglected or as though I could not ask for help.

How did you show a passion for the company?

I made sure that I researched the business thoroughly. I also researched key issues in the industry and how Persimmon are trying to tackle them. Additionally, I learnt their slogans and ethos so that I could mention that when answering questions. This basic knowledge of the company and their aims, along with some key examples of work they had completed, enabled me to show passion for the company. It also helped when they asked the question, “Why Persimmon specifically over other housebuilders?’

What would be your top tip for Bright Network members to follow in your footsteps?

I would apply for as many jobs as possible. Ask Bright Network to send you job recommendations as soon as they open for applicants so that you can apply early. Even if the job is not 100% what you are looking for, gaining experience in applications and interviews will help you get your dream role. Saying that it is really important that you research each company to make your applications individual and tailored to their needs. Throwing in facts and figures and examples of work the company have completed show that you have done work before the interview. Look at the skills that they are asking for and have multiple examples at hand of how you have used these. If the interview is on zoom, sit somewhere where you can have notes behind your screen to give brief prompts from your preparation. If you’re still studying full time spend a few hours a week solely on job applications and preparation for interviews, don’t neglect it as it will hugely affect your future. If you are graduated and not yet working, your full-time job should be looking for a job so spend most of your day doing this and you will definitely be successful. The Bright Network team are there for you so use them! They are always willing to help if you have any questions or queries so make the most of this before submitting applications or completing interviews and assessment centres.

What has been the most exciting task you've worked on in your first few months in your role?

The great thing about my job is that certain sites will follow me around the different rotations, and this is really exciting because in the two years that I am here I could see a site go from a derelict industrial area to the beginnings of a lovely housing development. The most exciting thing I have done so far is identifying sites that could potentially have developments built on them. Especially brownfield sites where we can really improve upon the existing environment.
