We recently caught up with Olivia about how they secured a role with AECOM, how they built commercial awareness before the interview and their top tips for Bright Network members looking to follow in their footsteps.
What stood out to you about AECOM?
I studied Geography at university and AECOM has a lot of roles catering to Geography graduates and that really attracted me to the firm.
How did you build your commercial awareness before the interview?
I feel I did it quite naturally. I worked for a year between graduating and my current role, in another housing-based role. Doing so gave me the chance to learn those insights into the industry and built that commercial awareness I needed to move forward in an application.
What would be your top tip to members going through the application process?
Definitely take the time to tailor each application to the specific role. Even though it takes more time, it really is the key to progress. It allows you to cover the key areas the firm is looking for to help them, rather than just the generic things the industry as a whole needs.
How did Bright Network help you secure this role?
One of things was how Bright Network provided me with a one stop place for the information I needed. From roles available to insight into the industry. With Geography being a degree that allows you to go into a range of careers. Bright Network and their resources really helped me narrow down what sectors I actually found interesting and wanted to pursue.
What’s been the toughest interview question you've faced and how did you tackle it?
Don’t worry about taking a pause and thinking about it. It’s ok to take a moment, don’t try to just rush to an answer and get it out the way. You can ask for a minute to compose yourself and then provide an answer you can feel confident with.
What top three tips would you give Bright Network members looking to follow in your footsteps?
- Make use of the directory of all the jobs on the site. There are many roles you won’t find anywhere else, and it could be the role for you.
- Keep an eye on deadlines. They can creep up fast and you may feel unprepared if the deadline is fast approaching.
- Make use of the events. I didn’t attend any and I really regret it. As I wish I would of used the opportunities to gain that extra insight and meet more people within the industry.
