Insights from a Graduate Developer at MRI Software

Book open Reading time: 2 mins

Chris Ridley joined theHorizon Development Team at MRI Software as a graduate a couple of years ago. Here’s what he has to say about his journey with MRI Software.

I joined the Horizon Development Team as a graduate in May 2009 having studied Computer Science at the University of Southampton. After a short period of one-to-one training I began learning more on the job. This was the best approach for me because the Horizon product has so much functionality and I learnt how all this benefits our customers during this phase. Just like starting any job, it was a steep learning curve but made all the easier knowing I had a supportive team around me to provide help whenever it was needed.

Since joining the company I have been working on some exciting new projects and technologies meaning that the way the team works is constantly evolving. I appreciate that the team is not afraid to try someone’s ideas, and equally to drop something if it doesn’t work. The team’s tasks are distributed well and we all have the opportunity to implement new features. This helps to keep me highly motivated.

Not only am I enjoying advancing my technical skills but I also have the opportunity to take further training to better understand the business value of the software. Furthermore I believe the strong relationship we have with other departments helps us better meet the needs of our customers. We have been working closely with one of the consultants recently to aid us with new developments, and for me their experience has been invaluable.

As well as the general working environment, one of the other reasons I like working at MRI Software is for the social activities. A few of the highlights have been taking part in the annual inter-department 5-a-side football tournament, pool tournament and karting.

I feel it is a testament to MRI Software that so many of my colleagues have been working for a number of years, and I am confident I will enjoy many more years with the company.
