Matthew's journey to Head of Professional Services

Book open Reading time: 2 mins

Matthew is a key member of the MRI Software team. He tells us about his journey from a graduate to a position as the head of Professional Services based in London

"I have 18 and a half years of service with MRI Software, after joining the firm as a Customer Services graduate consultant.

My first year was spent with the Development Team working at customer offices. I then spent several years in the Customer Services team before becoming a Business Consultant. I worked on a number of new implementations as the lead consultant before joining the Project Management team.

My first project was a large multi-site implementation for an executive agency of the MoD, followed by an even larger implementation and rollout for the National Trust. Subsequently I managed the implementation process - and the first few upgrades - for a new version of our software, Horizon 10.

During my time here, I tend to manage projects that are highly complex in some way, unique, or our first in a new territory or region. The highlights of my career here have been two pan-European rollouts spanning several years, as the customer took successive software upgrades when new functionality they sponsored became available. Also, I was involved in our first project in Hong Kong as well as the set up of our new offices in Singapore and Hong Kong.

In tandem with much of this I’ve been the main Graduate Recruiter for our Customer Services and Development teams, reviewing CVs, holding assessment days, and recruiting many new employees into the company. It's great to see so many of them moving forward with their own careers very quickly and enjoying many new experiences and challenges well beyond their initial role.

During my time I have also managed to fit in a Ph.D in Climate Change as well. This is due to the company allowing its employees ‘study days’ for qualifications or knowledge building that benefits the business or for self-fulfilment.

I am currently the head of Professional Services for our Horizon software, looking after a team of around 30 Project Managers, Business Consultants and Technical Consultants. This role includes day-to-day line management, scheduling of the team, and working alongside other team leaders and directors to improve what we do both internally as a business and as a company that our customers want to work with."
