Team overview

The Moody’s RMS Climate Hazards team, based in London, sits within the company’s Model Development group as part of the Models and Data Business Unit.

The team works closely with other hazard, vulnerability, exposure, and financial modelers to quantify the loss potential of extreme climate events and to ensure the accuracy, efficiency, and appropriateness of the final modelling product. We function as a multidisciplinary team of catastrophe modelers including statisticians, mathematicians, physical scientists and engineers, who build models critical to our Re/Insurance clients and essential to the other markets which Moody’s RMS serve.

Within the Climate Hazards team, a dedicated Climate Change team focuses on the quantification of risks associated to climate change. This includes not only bolstering Moody’s RMS catastrophe models with forward-looking climate change views, but also the development of advanced analytical tools for climate scenario analysis. As part of this work, the team is interested in the quantification of both physical and transition risks.

Overview of role/responsibilities

This role will perform research and development work to understand various effects of extreme climate phenomena, with a specific focus on the physical and transition risks associated with climate change.

The successful candidate will work closely with experienced climate scientists and catastrophe modelers to prototype and advance the building of mathematical models used to quantify risks associated to climate change, in particular with respect to climate extremes and their financial impacts, gaining in the process valuable exposure to catastrophe modelling and climate change risk assessments in the financial sector.

Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in a topical subject with exposure to climate change concepts (e.g., Climate Science, Physical Geography, Atmospheric Sciences, Meteorology, Applied Mathematics, Economics, Statistics, or similar).
  • Sound mathematical and statistical foundations.
  • Strong ability in programming languages used in model development (e.g., R, Python).
  • Critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Good skills in a Linux/Unix environment.
  • Ability to communicate analysis results and insights effectively.
  • Driven and committed, demonstrating self-motivation as well as strong team working skills.
  • Exposure to climate change models and climate change scenarios (nice-to-have).
  • Familiarity with climate change transition-related concepts (e.g. emissions accounting, temperature alignment, etc.) (nice-to-have).
