Created on 11 Jul 2017

Bright Network member and law student Mariko recently landed a Summer Placement Scheme at the commercial law firm Squire Patton Boggs after hearing about the role on our website. We chatted with Mariko to discuss what she thought of the experience.

Why did you choose this firm and this role?

I wanted to work at an international commercial law firm with a great culture and Squire Patton Boggs really embodies this. From my previous interactions with people from the firm, I had an insight into the friendly culture which prompted me to apply there. I have secured a vacation scheme at the Leeds office which was very important for me as I love the city and I am keen to work in the North.

What was the toughest part of the application process? And your favourite part?

The toughest part of the application process was the application form - it is difficult to stand out at this stage as there as so many applicants. My favourite part was the assessment centre as although I usually find these very daunting, the people at Squire Patton Boggs were very friendly and put me at ease.

Were you surprised by anything in the process?

I was surprised at how well my interviewers put me at ease in my assessment centre as I felt like I could perform at my best because of this.

What three top tips would you give your fellow Bright Network members?

Tip 1: Research the firm thoroughly in advance.

Tip 2: Know your CV/ application form inside out.

Tip 3: Try to stay relaxed on the day of an assessment centre.

What's your pre-interview ritual?

Take a few minutes to calm down before going into a firm so I am relaxed and can perform to the best of my ability.
