Graduate insight into securing an Investment Summer internship with WTW

Created on 23 Apr 2018

A massive congratuolations to Robert on getting his Internship with WTW. Here he gives us an insight on what the process was like and also offers advice for future applicants.

Why did you choose this firm and this role?

WTW are a dominant global force in the industry, making the opportunity to work with them very attractive. Their acclaimed grad scheme offers fantastic training opportunities and the culture within the office seems very warm and supportive.

The investment consulting internship will allow me to work directly alongside senior team members, gain real exposure to clients and, hopefully, make a genuine contribution to the business. As a Natural Sciences student, I have had limited exposure to the financial services industry. This role will allow me to apply my analytical, problem solving and interpersonal skills in a new, challenging environment while receiving guidance from experts in the field.

What was the toughest part of the application process? And your favourite part?

The toughest, and my favourite, part of the process was the AC. The interview was quite long, allowing the interview to probe the details of different experiences and really get to know the applicant. I really liked this as I had many opportunities to ask questions about WTW and didn't feel like I had to fit a pre-determined mould. The AC also included a group exercise and an inbox exercise; these both reflected day-to-day responsibilities that come with the role which only made me want the job more.

What three top tips would you give your fellow Bright Network members?

  1. Believe in yourself! It's cliche, but you genuinely do need to be 'in it to win it'. Don't discount yourself from an opportunity, that's the recruiters job!
  2. Opportunities open the door to more opportunities. If the chance to learn or gain experience presents itself, take it! Gradually building your experience and skill set will make future opportunities more accessible.
  3. Spend your time getting to know people. Academics are important, but interpersonal skills are vital! Employers want a candidate they want to work with, nit just a robot that will get the job done. Spend time networking and working with teams in order to develop your interpersonal skills
