Engineering Intern - Day in the Life

Book open Reading time: 1 min

Abigail – Engineering Summer Intern, MEng Civil Engineering. University of South Wales

What programme were you on at Arcadis?

I was a Summer Intern within the Highways Geotechnical Engineering team

Why do you love working at Arcadis?

The company is very focussed on future, including setting personal development goals and skills training. There are also Social events each week like the yoga class run at the Bristol office. These really encourage a strong work-life balance.

Can you describe a Typical Day in your role?

A typical day included completing project work such as summarising borehole logs and reports, conducting calculations or writing reports for Geotechnical Design or Investigation. It would also include, attending general/project team meetings, responding to emails and learning new software.

What was your favourite project during your time with Arcadis?

My favourite project was the Pontrilas Wastewater Treatment works. For this my role was to conduct bearing capacity and uplift calculations, create ground models, report my findings and co-author the Geotechnical Design Report.

What tips would you give someone who is applying to Arcadis?

To ask for help as soon as possible. Everyone was very willing to help me during my time and it's best to resolve things straight away. No one expected me to know everything so it was important I listened and asked questions to understand the project tasks.
