Solomon - Applications Engineer

"Working here has been very freeing. I'm trusted to get the work done without being micromanaged."

First impressions matter at Arm. But our focus is the lasting impressions we make on you and your career. Take it from Solomon – after only three months into his role as a graduate applications engineer, he’s certain he made the right choice with Arm: “Working here has been very freeing. I'm trusted to get the work done without being micromanaged. And I can speak naturally to my teammates. There's no pressure to work in a way that doesn't suit me. It’s been a stress-free start as I ramp up the knowledge I need to do my job and get more familiar with all the things we do in the applications team.”

Speaking of smooth starts, Solomon had the added challenge of beginning his graduate role in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

But in his opinion, nowhere else could have helped him more in clearing up any uncertainty or feeling connected while working from home: “Of course it's been weird, but also surprisingly smooth. Before I even started, my manager was quick to say, ‘Is there anything you need? Do you need a desk, a monitor, anything at all?’ Everything I needed, they provided. And because we have a very open, interactive culture of information that exists in different experts’ heads, there’s a willingness and desire to always be speaking. To learn from each other as people, rather than just reading documents. Which was pleasant to find because it made the situation seem a lot less restrictive.”

“I can point to people's lives and say, ‘Okay, I'm making a difference here. This is how I’m helping.’”

But the best bit about working at Arm? For Solomon, it’s seeing the fruits of his labour in action on a daily basis: “I wanted to feel like I was doing something that I could point to in people's lives and say, ‘Okay, I'm making a difference here. This is how I’m helping.’ And working at Arm, I can do that pretty easily. Everyone’s either carrying a phone, watching a TV or listening to speakers that our technology facilitates. Helping to interconnect our society with technology it depends on is nice. Being able to call your grandma, knowing her internet won't cut out or her phone won't mysteriously crash because we've helped make this reliable technology. In a word, it’s ‘satisfying’.”
