Securing a graduate role with BAE Systems - Top tips from Ashkay

Created on 31 Jul 2017

Bright Network member Akshay, a Chemical Engineering graduate from UCL, has successfully landed a place on BAE Systems’ graduate programme – well done Akshay! We found out how Akshay found the application process and his top tip for other students.

What drew you to apply for BAE Systems?

They are one of the few Chemical Engineering firms that don’t just deal in oil and gas, which was really important to me. Additionally, they offered the opportunity to work towards the chartered chemical engineer qualification.

What did the application process involve?

There was an online application, video interview, online testing and then an assessment centre.

What was the most enjoyable and most challenging part of the application process?

Overall, the application process was challenging because the process took around 5 months to complete. Having said that, I really enjoyed the assessment centre as I met candidates from all the roles available. What was also really useful was having the chance to meet all of the people that we might work with, including managers, so that we could see whether we would fit well into the team.

What would be your top tip for members looking to follow in your footsteps?

If you haven’t heard back from one of your applications after completing one of the stages (for example an online test), be sure to contact them.

How has Bright Network helped?

Bright Network’s website was very useful, as it had so much content in terms of what roles were on offer.

And finally … what will you spend your first pay check on?

I’d love to book a holiday – my girlfriend and I want to go to Valencia!
