Hayley Manning: A Day in the Life

Book open Reading time: 2 mins

Hayley is currently working as Just Purpose ACE Apprentice at Fieldfisher's London office.

9.20am

Once I arrive at the office my first action is to look over my emails and reply to any that I have received overnight. I will also look at my to do list and see what I have set myself for today.

10.00am

I attend my weekly team meeting. My team is based in London and Manchester so it is crucial that we can assign a time every week to catch up with each other and see what progress we have made. During this meeting we all discuss what we have achieved over the last week, our important tasks and discuss anything which we might be struggling with and gain ideas from each other. We also like to talk about our wins for the week, which can either be a small or big achievement.

11.00am

I continue any tasks that I have outstanding. This could be replying to emails about fundraising opportunities, organising events, or creating marketing material to advertise sustainability initiatives around the firm. As my role focusses on our community and sustainability pillars I am able to enjoy a variety of projects and tasks.

1.30pm

After lunch I make sure to catch up on my emails again and prepare for my afternoon meetings.

2.00pm

We have a quarterly meeting with our department charity champions to discuss our office charity partner, PAPYRUS. PAPYRUS' mission is to prevent youth suicide and promote positive mental health and wellbeing for young people. During this meeting we talk about our progress, upcoming fundraisers and discuss our new office wide initiative, One Firm Action. This is also a time for them to ask us any questions and to share ideas with the group about fundraisers.

3.00pm

My next meeting is with an NGO. During this meeting I will learn about their work and mission, how they could fit in with Fieldfisher, and see if there is anything that we can do with them. These are good opportunities to network with people in similar fields, learn how other companies approach corporate partnerships, and it gives me exposure on how to navigate meetings which companies are requesting work from us.

4.00pm

After my meeting I will dedicate time to work on my apprenticeship work. This can either include creating time logs on what I have learnt today and how it will impact my role, or I will read through and prepare for my next session. The work could be watching YouTube videos on Scope emissions, reading an article on sustainability initiatives, researching an event or theory, or making notes on different CSR theories. By dedicating time every day, I am able to focus on my work and make sure that I keep on top of it.

5.30pm

Before the end of the day I make sure to look at my to do list and label all of the important tasks that I want to achieve tomorrow. This helps me to feel prepared for the next day and know what tasks that I should get started with first.
