Isabella Harkins: A Day in the Life

Book open Reading time: 2 mins

Isabella is currently working as a Real Estate Transactional Solicitor Apprentice at Fieldfisher's Manchester office.

8:45am

I walk to the office through the city and arrive a little early to make a coffee before starting work for the day. I also use this time to catch up with others who are arriving, the kitchen is always busy with people beginning their days there are always so many friendly faces to talk too.

9:00am

I begin to review my emails and check if there are any updates on matters I am currently working on, I then subsequently check my calendar to see if there are any upcoming meetings or catch ups I have scheduled for the day. I find it useful to keep a written to do list so I can prioritise my tasks; I also begin to make notes of general reminders of things I would like to achieve by the end of the day.

10:00am

I have a discussion with my supervisor regarding a new task he would like me to begin; he takes the time to give me some background regarding the matter as I am relatively new to the case.

11:00am

Once a month members of the real estate team have a meeting called the Alan Riley Club to discuss recent legislation issues and widen our commercial awareness. I use this time to carry out some research regarding my allocation and prepare a small piece to discuss at the meeting later.

12:30pm

Myself and some other apprentices from Fieldfisher today had organised to meet for a coffee and some lunch in the city with some other apprentices who work in Spinningfields at a different firm. We met them at an Association of Apprentices event earlier on in the year.

2:00pm

After reviewing my emails after lunch I begin with my tasks I had noted for the afternoon. We are lucky to have a busy open plan office with lots friendly and supportive people, therefore I arrange with another apprentice to help check some post completion documents I had been drafting. I then send my draft documents for the associate's approval.

4:00pm

I send round a communications email to our team encouraging and alerting them of a One Firm Action tough mudder fundraising event we are participating in. One Firm Action is aiming to raise funds for MYZ by participating in the tough mudder challenge.

5:00pm

I go through my to do list and cross off the tasks I have achieved and make a note of reminders to complete the next morning. Finally I make sure all my time is recorded and released for the day before packing up.
