Lucy Moss: A Day in the Life

Book open Reading time: 2 mins

Lucy is currently working as a Corporate Solicitor Apprentice at Fieldfisher's Manchester office.

08.30

I am usually in the office by 08.30, and after securing the caffeine, I will review my e-mails, checking for anything urgent that has come in since yesterday. We have a great view on the 17th Floor in Spinningfields, so I love taking advantage of the view of the city first thing in the morning. I will prioritise my workload before 9am, and create a rough to-do list (although this often changes throughout the day in a busy corporate team!).

09.30

The teams in the Manchester, Birmingham and London offices have a weekly meeting to discuss current projects, capacity, and give a general update on any news or upcoming events. This morning we discussed what charity initiatives we could get involved in, including a sky dive(!), bake-off, and a karaoke night.

10.00

I have been asked to help out on a new acquisition that we have been instructed on by one of our larger corporate clients. My initial task is to draft the ancillary acquisition documents, and create a list of documents which will be used as a point of reference throughout the transaction. After finalising my first drafts of these documents, I send these to the supervising associate to review. Once these have come back, I will make any necessary amendments from their feedback, and I will send the documents to the solicitors on the other side of the deal.

13.30

Over lunch, an e-mail has come in from a partner asking me to assist with a DocuSign that needs to be executed today. I enjoy taking ownership and managing the progression of the envelope - It takes a lot of attention to detail to ensure there are no errors and the process commences smoothly.

15.00

I join Corporate's twice monthly training session. This week the training session is a "Deals De-brief" where fee earners from the three UK offices discuss lessons learnt from any deals that have completed since the last de-brief.

16.00

A client allotted some shares earlier in the week, and so I am tasked with making the relevant SH01 filings with Companies House, which can be done online. I take my time doing these to ensure that the final figures accurately reflect the share capital.

16.30

I have been working on a research project to assist with creating some PowerPoint slides for a Senior Associate in the team who is delivering training to a client. The training is on the liability of Directors for breaches of their duties under several different pieces of legislation. I am working on creating a larger information document, and an initial draft slide deck. This piece of work isn't particularly urgent, although I have been aiming to dedicate an hour to the task every day so that I meet the deadline without having to rush.

17.30

I note anything outstanding that I haven't managed to get around to today, and clear my desk. Time to go home!
