Hannah Caine: A Day in the Life

Book open Reading time: 2 mins

Hannah is working as a Real Estate Transactional Solicitor Apprentice at Fieldfisher's Manchester office.

8.30am

I arrive at the office early to review any outstanding emails and create a list of the tasks required to be actioned that day. I ensure my list is in priority order so I can manage my day effectively.

9.30am

In the Real Estate Finance team no day is the same and the work is fast paced so it is important to be organised. Yesterday I received an enhanced indemnity instruction from one of our clients and I will be running this alongside a Solicitor in my team. I have now received the replies to my initial enquiries, which I must review. I spend some time reviewing the matter then discussing any unusual points that arise with the Solicitor supervising me. I must review the documents received such as environmental searches and building insurance.

10.30am

I have now reviewed the replies to enquiries and drafted an email to the Solicitor with the points that remain outstanding. I draft a Mortgage Deed and Solicitor Certificate, which is sent to the Borrowers Solicitor for them to arrange execution with the Borrower. The Mortgage Deed is the charge that our client relies on as their security for providing the loan to the Borrower.

1.30pm

After lunch, I carry out some research for my Manager in relation to enforcement of Building Regulation certificates and when indemnity needs to be obtained. I carried out my research on Practical Law and provided my manager with a research report.

3:00pm

I had a meeting, which my Manager carried out with a few colleagues in the firm focusing on business collaboration. I was responsible for taking minutes of the meeting and drafting a report summarising the points of discussion. I had to pay close attention to details throughout the meeting ensuring I noted down all the important parts of the discussion.

4:00pm

Once the meeting had finished I had a look through the redemptions inbox emails that I monitor alongside my colleague Leah. A Borrowers Solicitor had requested that I drafted a Deed of Release and DS1 for them to review ahead of redeeming the loan. I drafted the documents sent them over to my client for approval before sending the undated drafts to the Solicitor. During this time, I also ensure the inbox is up to date and all client queries are responded to.

5:00pm

Before I log off, I update my to do list ensuring everything has been completed and check my emails are up to date ready for the next day.
